ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND FOOD INDUSTRY
Author: Anjali Dewan

The Food processing sector is critical to India’s development, for it establishes an important linkage and synergy between the two pillars of the economy, the Industry and Agriculture. India is the world’s second largest producer of food. The enormous growth potential of this sector can be understood from the fact that food production in the country is expected to be double in the next few years, while the consumption of value-added food products will also correspondingly grow. Food industry has an important role to play in linking Indian agriculture to consumers in the domestic and international markets. The growth of this industry will bring immense benefits to the economy, raising agricultural yields, enhancing productivity, creating employment and raising life-standards of a large number of people across the country, especially those in rural areas. The liberalisation of the Indian economy and world trade and rising consumer prosperity has thrown up new opportunities for diversification in the food-processing sector and opened new vistas for growth. Entrepreneurshipforms the pillar of a progressive society as it is an activity that creates value through recognizing business opportunities and through communicativeand managerial skills to mobilize human, financial and materialresources required to bring a definite upsurge to the economic development of a nation.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN HARYANA
Author: Anita Moudgil

Corporate Social Responsibilityinvolves social and environmental issuesin businesses regarding environmental management, efficiency, labor standards and working conditions, social equity, gender issues, human rights, education and alike. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India has notified the Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013 along with Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Rules, 2014 (CSR Rules) making it mandatory with effect from 1st April, 2014for the companies fulfilling the criteria as mentioned under Sub Section 1 of Section 135. The present paper aims to examine the corporate social responsibility and entrepreneurship and to understand the concept of CSR and its justification. The review of theory and empirics reveals that CSR is not to be considered as a charity work or philanthropic idea. The companies and the governments are responsible for the environment degradation, degradation of social values, cultural harms, corruption and many more issues. Limited liability doesnot mean limited responsibility. Sustainable development (economic-socio-political-cultural), inclusion of disadvantaged and marginalized must be in focus of the companies and the governments. The rising rich-poor divide proves that the benefits of growth and development are appropriated more by richer sections and by owners of the resources. A proper understanding of the concept of CSR will automatically lead to the social entrepreneurship.

WOMEN IN HANDLOOM INDUSTRY- THEIR ROLE AND PROBLEMS
Author: Dolly Lamba

In today’s scenario, women empowerment has become a major concern at both national and international levels. Ifwe talk about India, this concern i.e. empowerment of women has to be focused majorly in non-formal sectors, where women are working predominantly. One such sector is the handloom sector. With over 4.3 million peopledirectly and indirectly involved in the production, the handloom industry is the second largest after agriculturewhere we find largest economical activities. Industrialization in India proved to be a doom for our handloom andkhadi due to introduction of power loom. It majorly affected the life of women, which was the main work force inthe handloom sector as compared to men. As Jawaharlal Nehru rightly said that “the greatest revolution in a countryis the one that affect the status and living conditions of its women (Sen Gupta, 1974). In handloom industry wehave about 78% of women workers wherein, Sikkim has the lowest and Assam has the highest number of women
workers. The women workers are generally illiterate and poor which prove to be the two major factors stronglyaffecting the livelihood of these women. Thus, the economic status of these handloom women weavers shouldbe raised in the present scenario. The main purpose to conduct this study is to throw a light on the conditions ofwomen weavers through the years and suggest some action plans to combat this depreciation. The data frompublished material such as government reports, plan documents, articles, reference books has been collected to andpresented herein to form an unbiased conclusion.

BUSINESS PERFORMANCE OF LIFE INSURANCE COMPANIES IN INDIA
Author: Meenu Gulati

Till 2000 there was only one life insurance company (LIC) which was doing life insurance business in India. Soon after privatization insurance market was flooded with private life insurance companies in India. Presently Indian insurance industry is going through the phase of high growth but the penetration rate of insurance is low in the country in comparison to other developed and developing countries. It becomes essential to measure the business performance of life insurers on the basis of key indicators of performance so that proper measures can be taken timely to improve the performance of life insurance companies in India. Insurance industry is the backbone of the economy and it is estimated that India’s insurance industry will be fifth largest industry in the world economy by 2025. This requires in depth study of business performances of life insurance industries so that any flaw can be checked and controlled timely in order to achieve the above estimation. The parameters against which life insurers business performance is measured are: Total life insurance premium and market share, total number of new policies issued and its growth rate, business in force in terms of policy, total number of branches / offices and growth rate, number of grievance reported, grievance resolved, percentage of grievance resolved, individual death claim settlement and group death claim settlement for the financial years. Business performance parameters have been taken from the literature reviews and are explained in the following sections. With the help of these parameters the comparative business performance of public and private life insurance companies is also evaluated.
